it happened back in 2008 when john mccain lost. the republic party looked close at itself and now it's doing the same thing in the wake of mitt romney's defeat. it doesn't take much to understand why look at the numbers in key constituencies where republicans were facing uphill climb mr. romney did not do particularly well he got blown out with latino voters. mr. obama beating mr. romney with latino voters. women's vote. disadvantage for the g.o.p. continues. there you see again mr. obama with a commanding advantage over mr. romney. and lastly the youth vote. mitt romney's campaign didn't spend a lot of time courting these constituencies tried on occasions but it wasn't the overall focus of how they did it as opposed to the president's campaign which microtargetted. county by county, neighborhood by neighborhood. street by street and picked up these votes. and as a consequence. in the last time back four years ago republic party moved with the tea party to the right. in the next few weeks and months certainly before the 2014 mid te

then there is this big question, catherine, which john mccain is pushing for, a special investigation, a panel, a select committee to be put in place. is there any chance of that? >> reporter: well there seems to be some immediate pushback. to lay it out for folks. we have three senior senate republicans who believe the fallout from benghazi is so significant it is on par with some of the major scandals of american history. >> watergate investigation benefited from a joint select committee. iran-contra benefited from a select committee. i think finding the truth about benghazi is only possible if you combine the resources of these three committees and do it in a professional manner. >> reporter: shortly after that announcement the senate majority leader harry reid said he would not support the proposal and there has also been hesitation from other republicans and moderates in the senate saying that the proposal is premature. >> i think we ought to give the established committees of the congress an opportunity to see where we can get in answering some of the questions that everybody ha

john mccain was criticized when he ran for president for his more open perspective on how to approach this problem. he didn't get anywhere with that. he lost his election as well. what are the lessons here. >> the first lesson is the president is not the only one who can evolve on an issue. martha: the president said he had evolved on the issue of gay marriage. >> i think it is a significant fire. a signal that maybe we should be open. this will come up in the next congress regardless. certainly at least tone has to be moderated if not policy. and i think that is an important part of reaching out to a new electorate that is growing. there are many people in the republican party such as george w. bush and john mccain who put more politically on the line for comprehensive immigration reform more than many democrats if not most of them. i think there are folks in the party who can listen to things like that. there are ted cruz in texas for instance who is not for amnesty but knows the issue of immigration and border concerns. you have got jeff flake in arizona understand border issues. b

john mccain shared that same belief, our last candidate. gregg: it went nowhere. >> it went somewhere for george bush that got 44% of the hispanic vote in 2004, a percentage higher than barack obama got this year. there is a vibrant part of the republican party that understands that there has to be a practical solution to the fact that there are 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country. at the same time we could smartly deal with border security to prevent the flood of more. but for those 11 million year we just can't say selfdeportation as a solution. gregg: speaker john boehner came out and said and i'll quote, a comprehensive approach is long overdue. politically is now a good time to try and do it? >> well i don't think the republicans really have a choice at this point. i think the writing is on the wall that they are going to need to work with the president on it. and hopefully we will be able to actually see both sides come together and do some sort of comprehensive immigration reform. it's true that george bush -- george b
